The Human Rights Academy is pleased to announce the fourth edition of the traditional annual summer school on "Security and Human Rights: Unpacking the Dilemma of Migration Policies." This comprehensive program, to be held in Mardin, Türkiye from 26-30 June 2024, aims to explore the critical intersection between security and human rights through migration policies.

Welcome to the Human Rights Academy's Annual Summer School on "Security and Human Rights: Unpacking the Dilemma of Migration Policies." We are thrilled to announce this comprehensive program, set to take place in Mardin, Türkiye, from June 26th to 30th, 2024. We aim to delve into the critical intersection between security and human rights by analyzing migration policies amid the evolving challenges faced by the world.


In today's dynamic landscape, understanding the complex relationship between security and human rights is more crucial than ever. This education offers a unique platform for students, academics, professionals, and human rights advocates to deepen their comprehension of this crucial interface and contribute to advancing knowledge and practice in this field.


Participants will engage in thought-provoking lectures, interactive workshops, and panel discussions, exploring key topics such as:

  • Human Rights: A Dual Responsibility Within and Beyond Borders

  • The Use of ‘Hard Power’ at Home and Abroad

  • UNHCR's Role in Balancing Human Rights and State Autonomy

  • EU’s External Borders and Fundamental Rights

  • International Humanitarian Law: Safeguards for Time of Armed Conflict



We welcome applicants with backgrounds or interests in human rights, security studies, law, international relations, and related fields. Our program encourages participation from diverse academic and professional backgrounds, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration.

  • Eylül Başak Tuncel, UNHCR İzmir

  • Farah Karimi, Founder Simurgh Leadership Academy, Special Representative at OSCE PA Member of Dutch Senate

  • Jelena Pejic, Former Senior Legal Adviser at the ICRC-Geneva



Applications for the program are open until April 28th, 2024, via the form on humanrightsacademy.info. Selected participants will receive accommodation and meals during the summer school. Travel costs are expected to be covered by participants.
